Groundbreaking at Glen Cove officially begins two year construction project

Updated

Dozens of invited guests came to Glen Cove Elementary School to formally break ground on the new expansion and renovation project for the 53 year old school.  Principal April Brubaker welcomed those in attendance who joined the entire staff and student body.  Principal Brubaker recognized some of the staff and families who were students when Glen Cove Elementary first opened in 1971.

Roanoke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ken Nicely expressed his thanks and appreciation to the many groups and individuals who worked together to bring this project to reality including the Roanoke County School Board, the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors, County Administrator Richard Caywood and several staff at Roanoke County Public Schools and Roanoke County government.  Dr. Nicely thanked all the students and staff for their patience and flexibility during the construction project.  He also told the students he looked forward to seeing the brand new school that will open in about two years from now.

Roanoke County School Board Chairman Brent Hudson then thanked the public officials in attendance and thanked the students and staff for all their hard work each and every day.

Following a loud countdown from the students, a group of 20 representatives officially broke ground to mark the start of this two-year long project.

Like it's sister school, W. E. Cundiff Elementary, Glen Cove currently has open concept classrooms.  While a popular trend in the early 1970's, school designers quickly dropped the idea when it was found that the open concept classrooms did not create environments for the most effective learning.

As part of this project, open classrooms will be enclosed to create separate learning spaces that allow for more engaging and purposeful learning.

Improvements at Glen Cove, combined with improvements at W.E. Cundiff and an entire new career and technical education center, represents the single largest construction project in the history of Roanoke County Public Schools at approximately $130 million dollars.
